If you never shut off the laptop, the hard drive could eventually get damaged over time. Laptops usually run pretty hot so overheating can also become a problem. I always shut mine down every night and have never had any problems.

If you leave it on battery only, your battery will need re-charged.
If you leave it on power cord, nothing will happen.
Make sure you use a screensaver.
Laptops can also be set for standby or hibernation. Make sure you know how to "wake it up" though.
Also, make sure anytime you leave a laptop on all the time that the laptop gets enough air on all sides.... don't put it on any soft place, like a chair or bed, because heat can build up. Fans are on the bottom and/or back.

It may overheat, consider using the "sleep mode" or "hibernate" feature when the laptop is closed. This way you can start it up fast and leave it on without the computer using much energy. Be wary of power surges though.

Well, I read an article that said 50% of the experts believe leaving it on wears down the components and 50% believe turning it on and off also wears down the components. I would suggest turning it off to save energy unless you plan on using it in the next few minutes. At the least, put it in sleep mode to keep it from overheating.

It depends on WHAT you keave it on. I have found that leaving it on a road or the sidewalk often does hurt it, and leaving it on the top of your car when you drive off will DEFINITELY damage it. Leaving it on the train may damage it or may not, but you probably won't see it again. Leaving it on your desk at home powered up is probably OK, though, depending on how old your little brother is.

It depends on what type of screen you have on it. LCD screens eventualy burn out, there is no way to replace it besides buying a new lap top.
