My dh did an hour long presentation against the death penalty and found plenty of research. It's cheaper to put people in jail for life than the death penalty, you could kill innocent people, we are the only civilized country that has the death penalty, it's only us and third world countries, etc.
Also I would also give another vote to an essay on global warming. Maybe you could also end the essay with suggestions for ways people could actually get involved or help to end global warming themselves?

Well first of all i think it is a tad ridiculous that you get a year to write a 1500 word essay! we get 3 days and a very annoying teacher breathing down our necks saying it needs to be a lot better if were gonna turn it in! ANYWAY why not write about immigration in America? It has a major impact on today's society, yesterdays, and tomorrows.

Don't write about Bush or Iraq, its boring or general politics, these can get repeative and boring. Global warming is a strong topic and polar bears might become extict because the arctic is melting. Storms like Katrina can happen and tusnamis also.
Cures and diseases, like cancer and aids.

If its any subject and it needs to be argued, it could be something doing with drugs or alcohol.
There are a million things to write about in the field of science. I'm sure you'll think of something.

Argue about genetic testing and cloning. I recently had to debate the subject. We had a group of people split into groups. Pro, against, and undecided. At the beginning, there were 17 against, 20 undecided and 1 pro, Me. at the end there were 0 undecided, 2 against and 36 pros.... Yeah, that's a good subject to run with....

A good idea would be writing about a quote that you agree or diagree on and expanding from there.
One quote i find very interesting is: i think it goes "A coward dies many times througout his life, but the valient man only dies once".
