A laptop will last 3 yrs or more if it's taken care of - possibly more if the fan inside is good.

They tend to breakdown quicker because all the components are close together and the air circulation isn't as good as with a desktop.

The other killers of laptops are... spills, drops, and dust !

What's the best brand ? I've heard nothing but bad things about Compaq, Dell, and Alien Ware. But I think it's a matter of opinion.

I had an old 286 laptop and it was still running DOS (no windows) when I gave it away about 3 years ago. It was from the late 80's early 90's. My oldest I have now is a IBM Thinkpad 770, my mom uses it and has dropped it on the carpet a few times falling asleep with it in her lap. I think it about 1997 it came out and my iSeries from 2000. I have a 2 HP's I not even begin to remember when they came out, may actually be my oldest. All still doing their thing. The old 286 I not remember who even made that thing, it had a B&W screen, I not think they had color then. Take care of them and they last a long time. I think the older ones more durable though as the hardware was not as cheap as it is today. I not going to say a best brand, but, 2 IBM's and 2 Hewlett Packards have done well with me.

My last one is going on seven years with no problems other than it is slow when compared to today's laptops because of the technology.

As for the best brand ...I really can't tell you, I've had laptops from Toshiba and IBM and Acer........all have been excellent. My next will be the new Mac with Intel inside........It will be like getting two computers for the price of one; the ability of these computers to run OS X and Windows make it the best of both worlds.........the friendliness of a Mac and the fact that I don't have to scrap all my Windows software. The security of using the Mac online will give me some peace of mind.

depends on the level of laptop you buy ... most laptops have an average life of 3 to 5 years but as I said it depends on how hard you work them and how powerful/well built they are to begin with

A high end Toshiba - HP - Dell (in that order) are my recommendations as far as quality goes

Dells last until the first time you drop them. Plastic tends to break easily.
