i'm a massage therapist and I deal with many clients that are very shy about glute massage. To make them feel more comfortable I use to just skip the glutes if they had left their underware on, but now I just work on top of it because it is SO beneficial and they very much appreciate it once it is done.
That is the mindset you have to be in, you're there to help the person. If it something that, no matter what, you are just not comfortable doing, then you should talk to your manager. I am not comfortable doing groin massage just because I've had two perverts come in claiming they where in pain when really they just wanted a hand job. But in the physical therapy setting most clients have been referred from doctors, so I doubt you would have many problems with perverts there.

I know what you mean. It is difficult to approach people in intimate areas. I just tell myself that this is part of my job and hopefully it will help this patient. The more you do it the easier it gets. I have been in healthcare for over 10 years and it is now like changing a diaper. Another thing to do is think of something else while you are working. Mentally make a shopping list.etc But make sure you are still aware of what you are doing. It will become easier. Good luck to you!!!

I used to work as a RN for a lot of years. I've also had to have a lot of physical therapy. I've never heard of physical therapists having to do butt and groin massages.
That being said, I've had to do a lot of things that would have normally made me uncomfortable. What I had to do was to be able to see people with what is called a "clinical eye".
All of the Rn's I worked with had to do the same thing. What you have to do is practice looking at people as objects. In normal life this is a bad thing but it is necessary when you have to look or do something that is normally considered sexual as part of your job.
That is how male doctors can do gynecological exams and breast exams without getting sexually aroused. It's similar to how you as a woman can let a male doctor do these exams on you. You don't look at him as a man, but as a "doctor".
As a PT tech you must look at patients in a clinical way, as patients and not as persons. At the same time realizing that they are persons and worthy of respect. It takes some mental juggling and practice but eventually you will be able to do it.
Part of this is practicing to have a professional manner. Other people (patients) will often take their cue from how you act. If you act as if something is not a big deal, they will tend to look at it that way too. You also, must not let the patient make sexual comments.
I also tend to be a shy person. Realize that your classmates are all nervous about this also. The more relaxed that you "act", the more relaxed they will tend to be. The more you practice "acting" relaxed when doing uncomfortable procedures, the sooner you will feel relaxed when doing them.
My best wishes for you.

Pretend like you are wearing white gloves and picture the underlying anatomy and the attachments of the mucles you are actually helping. Don't close your eyes in the groin area...you might slip. But in other broad, non invasive areas I like to close my eyes to really feel the tissue and muscles.

Why would anyone need a butt massage or a groin massage? I think someone is pulling your leg.

I am shy too. I think if you and I were to work together we could get over the discomfort of these types of messages. Let me know.

What are groin massages? Is it the muscles in the creases of the legs or something, or are you saying you are supposed to massage peoples' genetalia?? Could you please tell us by adding the answer to the details? Thanks. :)

Be an adamant professional.
Consider how much you are helping people out of their pain.
Think about the relief they will receive and be proud of the fact you assist people in improving their quality of life.
I'm sure they appreciate it. You need to appreciate it, too.
