Ah, public middle school, that's incredibly easy.
The hardest part is finding a sponsor, you have to find a teacher that will support it, once you have, it's a cinch to fight for it.
So, find your adult sponsor, then go to the office and find out what you have to do to become a club (in middle schools, you usually can just set one up easily). If you have to propose it to the school board then fine, whatever. Now, most likely (unless you're in the new england area) you're going to have to fight for it. Your argument is quite simple: The Equal Access Act. The Equal Access Act (look it up on Wikipedia if you want more information) made it so that, in public schools, if one extra-curricular club was allowed, all of the others are allowed. They either have to allow the GSA, or they they have to forcefully disband all extra-curricular clubs. Once you state that, you should be through. ^_^
But, yeah, the biggest challenge is usually finding a teacher to sponsor the club.

What a great question! First of all, you need to do your research, just like one would for any group. Draw up meeting plans, find a faculty advisor and a place to meet, and get permission from the administration. That last bit is a formality, really; American public schools HAVE to let you have a GSA if they have at least one other student organisation (even a basketball team or honour society). Then spread the word about your meeting... put up flyers, do word of mouth, all that. Maybe you could offer food or a raffle at your fist meeting to generate more interest. Remember to stand up and speak out against any discrimination you hear/see, and if people treat you badly because of it, try not to get too angry because that will just give them satisfaction. Ask the administration to step up anti-harassment rules; many schools already have a zero-tolerance policy, though it's not always inforced. Anyway, keep being awesome, and good luck!
