Perhaps you should pay the area a visit and ask in local shops & diners what the locals think about the area. If you think it appropriate get intouch with the local law inforcement agency and see if they view it as a hotspot. Detroit is a dangerous city so whereever you move there will be some problems.

It looks as though your real problem is with your parents. Perhaps a little distance between you will make them realise you are an adult and can run your own life.

Are you moving there to spite your parents?
Is your new husband pressuring you into moving there?
Have you actually spoken to the residents around the place you plan to move to?

Your not looking for advice, your looking for someone other than your parents to tell you what to do.

You are scared at the thought of living in an area with high crime.
Perhaps if you TELL your parents WHY you are planning to move so far away, they will back off a little?
If you can't or wont do that, LOOK FOR SOMEWHERE ELSE TO LIVE!

Do you really want to raise children in an area where they might not reach 10 years of age?

If you want to relocate to another State, look at ones with LOW crime-rates. Preferably places with reasonable employment prospects.
You want my advice?

TALK TO YOUR PARENTS AND EXPLAIN EVERYTHING!!

With whatever you decide -- Good Luck!

No matter where you move you chance getting hurt, you could get hurt living where you are now. There are more instances of violence in a big city, but the reason for that is there are more people. I wouldn't worry so much about the violence, Detroit has a lot of history, and beautiful places to visit. I would say the main reason your family is telling you all these horror stories is because they don't want you to be so far from them. Keep in mind eventhough they seem selfish by what they are doing, it's because they love you and they are worried your leaving them. Do what feels best to you, after all it is your life not theirs.

I don't know that area but if your parent are butting into your affairs then it best that you move far. I would check out that area at night and ask the locals how the town is, even ask the neighbors what they think of the area, all towns have crime. It sound like your parents again want to control you even where you live. But check out before purchasing because you can't back out once the paper starts cause their heavy penalty to pay if you do.

If I were you I would tell your mother she is right that is a dangerous neighborhood and infact Detroit being in the top 3 most dangerous cities in the US isn't safe enough either and move completely out of the city.

Detroit(and suburbs) is a great city. you'll never be bored. lived there for a while and loved it. Just make sure to buy a .44 magnum. it is the murder capital after all.

My wife and I, because of our work, found ourselves in what was viewed as one of the roughest areas in the Uk (Will not name names so as not to offend) We were there for 5 years and had a great time.
Treat people as you would want them to treat you and it can go well.
Be yourself

in the uk there are crime statistics published...and that can help as its non emotional statistics for a given district...but trouble can strike anywhere..who can say when and where..would the local paper give a clue...eg have they a web you could look at...and see if they are talking flower arranging or face arranging..that bit made me smile...good innit...
