Is it possible to install a operating system on a external hardrive, and like plug it in whenever and load up the operating system?

Sure ... it all depends on your PC's BIOS.

If it allows setting any particular USB or Firewire device as the primary boot device then it's possible to install an OS on that device & boot from it.

No more to it than that.

As far as I know it is possible, depending on your motherboard. But, I wouldn't reccomend it because it will be much slower on an external drive than it would be from an internal harddrive.

Yes, you can. If the motherboard supports USB boot. If not you will need to either boot from an onboard hard drive or a boot floppy\CD.
