Amphibians are cold-blooded vertebrates that live on land as adults, breathing with lungs, but mate and lay their eggs in water, and live the early part of their life in water, breathing with gills. They include frogs, toads, newts and salamanders. There are a few species that are completely aquatic, either never developing lungs and breathing with gills their entire lives, or developing lungs as adults and coming to the surface to breathe.
