Hurricanes can not maintain category five status for long because atmospheric conditions must be perfect (by hurricane standards) for them to reach that stage. Several of the recent hurricanes have attained category five ratings at times during their existences; e.g., Hurricanes Katrina (I think) and Rita, but they did not stall and had been down-graded to category fours by the time they made landfall. They generally do not stall for long. Several years ago a hurricane named Elena was heading into Tampa Bay when it did indeed stall, then reversed course and moved across the Gulf into Louisiana. Camille was a category five hurricane which actually made landfall in Mississippi as a category five. As a survivor of Hurrican Charly which devastated the Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte area of Florida in 2004 (Friday the 13th! of August), I can tell you that a category four hurricane is quite terrifying enough and does catastrophic damage near its eye!

I believe hurricane Mitch stalled out for 2 or 3 days in October just north of Honduras a number of years ago. -The country was a MESS (many died in mudslides) by the time it was over. I THINK Mitch was a Cat.5. It was a NASTY brute- 4 or 5..
