According to The Little Oxford Dictionary, superstition is "belief in the existence or power of the supernatural; irrational fear of the unknown; a religion or practice based on such tendencies; widely held but wrong idea." Let us examine that definition in depth.
First, there is "belief in the existence or power of the supernatural". This means that there is believed to be some force that can influence the events on the Earth.
Second, there is "irrational fear of the unknown." This has been endemic to the human race since the early days when a cave man did not know if that cave was safe to enter or if he would be attacked by a bear.
Third, "a religion or practice based on such tendencies." This is the belief that a charm or talisman, such as throwing salt or hanging a horseshoe over the doorway, can affect the aforementioned supernatural force.
Finally, there is a "widely held but wrong idea." This is a belief that is believed only because everyone else believes. It may be wrong, it may be preposterous, but all the other people think it is right and you believe it too.

it is a religious belief. Originally the wiccans or pagans considered black cats to be very lucky. However, when the campaing against witches happened (witch burnings etc) the myth was reverted by the christians, who believed that witches were bad and therefore anything witches believe must be opposite (ie: black cats are now considered bad luck). Ironically, christians incorporated more pagan traditions into their own religion as a means of converting pagans to christianity. thus we have yule tide, and the christmas tree and decorating etc....

Supposedly black cats are unlucky because of witch myths or whatever. But honestly, I've got a black cat and she's been a wonderful addition to my life and I haven't become unlucky by adopting her. A cat has no control over what the color of their fur is, a black cat is no different than a tabby cat.

It is told that in early medieval times the captain of a ship was walking down a dock when a black cat ran out in front of him, startling him to the point of falling into the water. Bad luck for him when the black cat crossed his path.

They are just cats. If God made them luck animals don't you think people would be going to look for black cats just for luck? How wealthy we would all be, or have the best of what we want just because of a cat. So a cat is just a cat nothing else regardless of it's colour. Look up to God and stop wasting your time with cats my dear.

Neither. It's an old superstition, whose origins are probably lost in the mists of time. Some of my best cats have been black.
