Because those that do not know their history are doomed to repeat the same mistakes, over and over again.
Like the other person said, human nature hasn't changed in thousands of years.
It's amazing we have lasted this long....AND prospered.

Also, a lot of these Yahoo Answer questions keep repeating.

Human nature has not changed for at least 10 thousand years- just technology. So yes, it is the same stories over and over. That is why it is important to study history.

i guess as long as we- humans - with a limited time on earth- have the same needs, stages of evolution and questions, YES it is history repeating, at a macro and micro level...we improve things, but we still firght wars for power, we still punch people in the face because they were mean to us....we learned something from past mistakes, but we still have to learn to "read" to "write" to "speak"...every generation , but aslo we drop a bad "habit" every generation....
