I think there is just more reporting nowadays than before, but i think it is kind of hard to tell. There have been a lot of reporting in the media lately about the more "sensational" cases. i think this in turn leads to other members of the media sensationalising other cases, in a bid to get better ratings.
just look at the diana brimble thing, and now the new case of a 16yr old girl claiming rape on a p&o ship. the media would not have covered that before. but because it involved p&o again, and the diana brimble thing was big news, here is another way to bring it back to the publics attention.
The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research report figures show a dramatic increase in the number of sexual assaults reported to police - from 9151 in 2002-03 to about 11,000 to the end of June 2004.
As well as the staggering number of reported gang rapes and child sexual assaults, the NSW Rape Crisis Centre reported 196 adults stepping forward for the first time to admit they were sexually assaulted when they were children. There were 77 people aged 55 and older who reported being raped.
The bureau report also showed 63 people contacted the service believing they had fallen prey to drink spiking.
Ms Willis said: "Sexual assault figures are increasing across the board, but it's impossible to know whether it's the number of incidents that are rising or the number of women deciding to come forward. The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics collated the police figures ... we only recently finalised ours.

In most cases, because I doubt very much there is one source of change for these statistics, it's the willingness of women to come forward and report the crime.
Unfortunately, it's a very complicated issue in some cases because some cases will turn out to be false accusations, debates of "consent", alcohol or other substances, the reputation of plaintiff, and so forth.
Furthermore, whatever the statute of limitations is for such a crime in Australia may also yield many older cases to affect the increase in reports.
That doesn't justify or condone the crime in any way, but what I am saying is that it will take a few years of data collection and research to see what the true rate is rather than what people perceive it to be purely due to current media reports.

I think there are many things. These days more wemon are reporting it. The media is reporting it more. Guys seem to be getting more cunning.
There's also the fact that the cops get these guys and the courts let them off scott free so they think they can get away with it again and other people will see it as being an easy crime.
Maybe the fact that it is more of an open subject now and it's everywhere. I think that the Muslim Sheik fool saying about wemon who aren't covered up should be raped. That raised awareness.
Again back to the muslim thing - multiculturalism I guess. Lots of countries allow their men to do it to their wemon and they continue that rubbish over here.
Personally they should all be castrated. Why should they get joy out of something that will make the most beautiful act in the world, making love, unenjoyable to their victims

Didn't Australia outlaw the ownership of firearms a couple of years ago? Maybe the guys know the women are defenseless now. Maybe women aren't being as cautious now. It could be just a spike. Sometimes crime increases with no apparent reason.

There is an increase and so there should be its a legitimate occupation in Australia due to Multiculturing and the politicians chasing the votes and their politically appointed judges turning a blind eye to what is going on
