A friend suggested letting it drain completely before recharging it and unplugging it immediately when it is fully recharged. Another says that turning it on and off frequently in a day shortens the battery life. Are these true? Do you have other suggestions?

Sorry but they are both wrong. Laptop batteries do not have "memory" like old time zinc batteries so you don't need to worry about draining it completely to stop this problem. And there is no harm in leaving it plugged in after a full charge because the charger stops charging as soon as the battery is full.

Secondly, turning the computer off when not in use saves much more battery life than leaving it on all day, unless you are turning it off for only a minute or so.

Don't know what type laptop you have so don't have any other suggestions at this time.
