Political correctness is a new word for good old fashioned politeness.
used to be, we didn't say certain things in public out of respect for one another. Whether this resepct was real or feigned, it served as a boundary in civilised society.
Now people who want to be rude and disrespect people who are different from them say they resent having to be "politically correct". When really they just want to be disresepctful and rude.

Political correctness does not violate the first amendment. The only thing that happens if you are not "PC" is that you may be considered rude by someone, if there's someone around who even cares.

Political correctness is not a law or any rule. It is just a side effect of the changes in culture. As culture ebbs and flows, certain terms or slang go in and out of favor. People sense this change and the newer conventions rub some people the wrong way, and they label this "political correctness". This is exacerbated by modern media, which spread cultural conventions and changes far and wide very quickly - too quickly for some people's taste.

It will be the same years from now, when more changes in the culture occur and positions and terms in wide use today fall out of favor. Everyone around now will be going "when did the rules change? What's this new 'correctness' I must adhere to?".

nothing happens if you aren't politically correct, though the manners police might speak to you harshly and criticize you for not thinking the way they do.
"political correctness" seeks to change words or phrases that are deemed inappropriate or offensive into words or phrases that are not. the problem is that everyone knows exactly what these euphemisms mean, and thus all that has been done is to create yet another way to express an identical concept. some examples are "jiminy cricket" for jesus christ, "the big C" for cancer, and "african american" for black. the big C and jiminy cricket are some of the earliest uses political correctness in the news media from the 1950s.
but the whole idea behind political correctness is to lessen the negative impact of a feature of language, but i honestly believe its just a waste of time as everyone knows what the words mean, and thus no meaning is hidden.
probably the most absurd attempt at politically correcting a phrase is the change the global language monitor attempted to initiate to the phrase "master and slave disk drives." they felt it was offensive to the ancestors black americans, and living slaves all over the world, and perpetuated slave ownership. they suggested the new phrase "primary and secondary disk drives," even though the "master and slave" title more accurately depicted the disks' functions.

Being "politically correct" simply means you are saying or doing the right thing in a way that won't offend anyone. Politically correct people try to speak a language that avoids any offensiveness such as saying "physically challenged" instead of handicapped or disabled.

Sometimes though, political correctness can get carried too far. Just check out some of the politically correct fairy tales.

Being politically correct or not being politically correct doesn't violate the first amendment. Not being allowed to be either does.

What happens depends on the situation. If you call a black person black, and they prefer African American, one hopes that individual is mature enough to say, "Hey, I prefer African American. That cool?"

Personally, political correctness isn't going to kill anyone, but you don't have to go overboard. If someone prefers a certain label, respect that preference. Otherwise, be politically correct or don't. It's up to you.

Political correctness in itself is a violation of the first amendment, freedom of speech. As a black I can call another black man a n*gger, but if I was white, I'd get my @$$ kicked. Pandering to one part of society by infringing on the rights of another is logically inappropriate, however in America, it happens all the time. I cannot voice my opinions about minorities, women, homosexuals, or any other group unlike myself. I can get written up by my employer and if I continue to exercise my first amendment rights, I can get fired.

You won't go to jail for being politically incorrect. You may get beaten up for it, though. Political correctness is a stupid attempt to form rules about what is and what isn't offensive. This is obviously futile because different people in the same group find different things offensive. The best thing to do is to be sensitive to your listener(s) and apologize if anyone is unneccesarily offended. That is a good rule in any culture.

Political correctness as it has become is showing respect in a conversation taken waaay too far. Being politically incorrect can be anything from offending an easily offended person with something that shouldn't have offended any decent human being to outright disrepect by using racial slurs and similar remarks.

Freedom of speech says, you won't be a criminal for whatever you think or say.

Freedom of speech does NOT say, you should say anything you want. Freedom of speech does NOT say, you won't have consequences for what you say.

A good test would be to walk up to your parents and tell them they are piece of garbage. This IS a protected speech... and see if you have any consequences.

Remember, law is the last line of defense. Just because it's legal, it doesn't mean it is a good thing to do, or you should do it.

Political correctness is a totally different matter. It can be taken to extreme degree. But in an essence, you should consider others feelings before you speak.

If you're not politically correct the government can't do anything but generally people will shun and exclude you. I think that's dumb but cannot admit that it isn't happening. So I am politically correct in public around people that don't know me very well but when around friends I don't care what I say. Political correctness is really getting on my nerves, to put it shortly.
