When people say someone stole their SSN they are usually referring to someone using it on an application without your permission. In a lifetime you might give your social to 100 people on the phone, in person, in school, or even calling your HR department at work. So the best thing to do is get your free credit report from annualcreditreport.com and paying attention to all of the accounts listed to assure nothing on there is false. If it is you can investigate the account. But if someone has your social that is no crime.

Report it to Social Security immediately, give name of person who might have stole it. Social Security will tell you how to handle this. Also, report this to local Police, get copy of your report. If you know the person has it in their possession, and can prove it, have police go with you to get it back then file theft on that person. Act quick, do it.

report it and get ready for a long painful fight with the government.
I heard about a woman that for several YEARS had over 100 W-2s from various states. She had to prove that she wasn't the person that earned the income. The IRS & the Franchise Tax Board (CA) were after her for unpaid taxes. It took lots of work to start fixing the problem. Last I heard was that she was waiting to see how many wrong W-2s she will get for 2006. BTW, her SS# was stolen by numerous illegal alien criminals.

you can call the social security office but I doubt if they will give you a new number...
but I would alert the credit bureaus.... and sign up for credit watch w/ all three so that you can keep up with whats going on with your credit and they will alert you when any accounts are open in your name

contact the department as soon as possible. record the name and complaint number for your future reference. then let them deal with it, and as soon as a clash appears, at least you have been honest and they can work out the crime with you not a suspect.
if you dont tell them, it will be harder explaining it when something does happen, and get treated with suspicion for not telling them sooner.

Shut down all your "old" open accounts, get new account numbers, but first, notify ALL of your creditors that this has happened and they will more than likely be glad to help.
