Chameleons are very difficult unless you have lots of experience with reptiles. They are easily stressed and do not like handling or other animals (need to be separated visually from any other animals). They need high humidity, good air circulation (in most homes, you get one OR the other, but not both), high %UVB lighting, heating lamp or ceramic heat emitter, and calcium & vitamin supplements. Enclosures are typically 3 x 3 x 4 or larger, depending on the species. They don't drink standing water, so you will have to get a waterfall & pump or create a dripper system.
You need to do some research on what types are available and the specific care for each. Here are some websites where you can start:

In general, males are easier to maintain than females, even though they get larger. Females will need an egg-laying set-up. They will produce eggs (infertile) even without a male and unless you provide a suitable laying spot, the famles will become eggbound and die.

A male chameleon might develop into greater astounding in colouration and a female might develop into greater uninteresting in colouration as they the two could be responding to their meditated image - the male becomming aggressive and showing and the female turning out to be shy and submissive. Chameleons are nicely hidden via their base shade, eco-friendly, mixing with their eco-friendly ecosystem. Their fairly shade is a meditated image of temper, no longer ecosystem.

like the one guy said in detail ( you should prolly give him the best answer) you gotta have ALOT of experience. we do not carry chamelions at my petstore. they are so fragile and are not guaraunteed to make it in the shipping process. the other petstore in our area sold one of our regular customers one, but they didnt know how old it was or what gender it was. the veiled chameleon died in three days cause he didnt have uv bulbs, the right temperature or flowing water. research the crap outta this and get all the equipment before hand. its the car ride home that does it in for these little guys, so its necessary to have a warm and comfy home for them right when you get there. good luck either way!

I don't know a bunch about chameleons, but I do know that they are high-maintenance animals that do -not- thrive on being held. I suggest doing a -lot- of research before making this purchase.

my cousin had a chameleon, and he was the sweetest thing ever. as babys, they're about half a foot, but they grow up to about a foot.
as far as i know, they are overally pretty simple.
a cool trick is to:
1) get a plastic cup
2) put holes in the bottom of it
3) put water in the cup
4)set cup on top of chameleons cage
this is great because its constantly being fed new water
oh water they dont drink water from cups, they lick of of plants,
so when you have the "cup method", it drops on leaves and works perfectly
hope i helped!
good luck!

since you asked, cameleons are a very sencible reptile, they need a special enviroment, big cage always water running, humidity, and they can be very stressfull and die easily and they cant be in a glass cage there better in open cages, but it's totally not recommended.
if you make the choise on perchasing it, remember, if the collor is dark like brown it's becouse is under stress and check if he has any ticks the collor his thick, make sure he's healthy
