There are no legal godparents. That's a religious thing. Government has nothing to do with it.

If you wanted to be someone who takes care of the kids in the event of the parent's death, they have to put that stipulation in their will.

There is a legal way to be a guardian. I have never heard of a legal godparent. a Godparent is someone who would teach a child about "God" and live the religion to set an example for the child.

A godparent is an honorary, not a legal, position. It's usually part of the Christian baptism, but I'm sure the honor can be bestowed informally.

No, dear. The purpose of a "godparent' is to teach the child about God and religion should their parent (s) not be able to, for whatever reason. You can't teach a child about God in a non-religious way.

I wasnt aware that there was ANY way to be a legal godparent.

I am godfather to 3 children and have never had anything "legally" recorded.

The only thing that I have ever done is gone through the church service.

Perhaps I am doing it illegally.

I am interested to hear some other opinions

I think you're confused about what a godparent is. It's not a legal position.

If you're talking about someone who gets custody of the child if both parents die, the parents should specify that in their wills.
