Movies are modern versions of plays. In playspeak, there are 2 types of plays. A play or a movie is either a 'Tragedy' or a 'Comedy'. A 'tragedy' is any play/movie where the good guy dies at the end (or any character that is loved by the audience). A 'comedy' is any play or movie where the good guy does NOT die at the end. Usually no one dies in a 'comedy'. All other movie genres are just sub-genres of these 2. :-) A movie will be 'sad' at the end because the 'writer' is trying to strike up a particular emotion in his collective audience.

Many movies are based on true stories, and in the real world there isn't always a happy ending. Even if it isn't a true story, fiction writers understand that there is entertainment value in tragedy. Sure, I like a good happy ending like everyone else, but a good heart-wrenching tragedy can be very moving. It can move people to live their life better and not take things for granted.

I wonder which movie in particular made you think of asking this question?

Because not everything in life ends on a happy note. Real life doesn't always end on a high note.
