When is the best time of year to take my step sons and my younger brother to the zoo? They are between the ages of 7 and 9. I don't want them to see anythin they shouldn't. When my mom took me when I was younger I saw the monkeys mating and she told me they were fighting. I don't want to make up any stories when I take my stepkids and brother.

Probably in early summer. Animals are less "active" that time of year, and, since the temperature is mild, most of the animals should be out and about.

Animals mate all year round- each species is different. I would say go in late spring/early summer to see the babies. If I remember correctly, there was at least one animal mating pretty much each week, so it all depends if you are lucky enough to walk by during that brief encounter.
At the zoo I am at- there are two huge tortoises (African Spur thighed) that mate at least twice a day in the petting zoo. Sometimes the kids know what is happening, other times they find one of the workers and ask what they are doing. Usually, I ask what they think the turtles are doing, and I get everything from fighting, playing, one turtle is sick (he is "coughing"). They watch with mild interest, and leave.
This day and age though, they will probably know a bit about sex at that age- it is on pretty much every TV show.

I would suggest that you take kids that age any time you feel like it. Explain what the animals are doing. Eating, mating or just grooming each other. What trauma are you going give to the kids if you explain what is going on? They may appreciate and learn from what you have told them.
The most trauma I received was from a Gorilla throwing dung at me. My brother made ribald suggestions about Zebras doing it, my father explained about babies, I think I had more fun from from brothers ribald suggestions. At 8, one is very naive.
So take them any time you you like. If you don't know the answer to a question, find a keeper and ask them. I am 48 and I still seek out the keeper.
Do it, regardless of the time of year, educate, do not stifle.
