Pardon my ignorance - I'm from Ca, and am just wondering what town has the best pizza, and WHY. What restuarant should I visit to get the best 'Pizza Experience?'

I'm from Chicago, and the best pizza is from:

New York.

Chicago's deep dish pizza is a wallop of mozzarella. It's a mozzarella pie. Imagine a pie filled with a half inch of mozzarella, then covered with your basic toppings (sausage is best on a Chicago pizza), then a layer of pizza sauce that's on the fresh side (rather than the typical saucy stuff). If you want to know, I think that Giordano's has a better crust than other restaurants that most will suggest (like Gino's East or Lou Malnati's, which are also very good). [Don't get me wrong, I love Chicago.]

Why NY pizza? It's the brick-oven stuff that hasn't been duplicated in Chicago, though there are some places advertising their brick-oven pizza. I like Lombardi's, in Little Italy. The crust is like thin bubbly bread. The "pull" is essential -- the crust should be a bit chewy and should have a slight burned taste. Fresh mozzarella is a must (unlike the dry yellow stuff that most places have). These are the core of the NY pizza, in my opinion. NY pizza is about taste. Without the heaviness of Tons of Cheese, you can enjoy a lighter, tastier pizza.

I wouldn't even consider anything outside of NY (or Chicago) pizza. [Although an NY food critic picked a Phoenix pizzeria as the best in the U.S. I think it's NY style, anyway.] "California Pizza Kitchen"? Please.

If you're looking for a great 'pizza experience' in CA - I would have no idea what town to go to. Of course, pizza tastes, like anything else, are individual. My preference is New York style pizza! To me, it's the best! So wherever you are, look for NY style pizza and try it.

Anywhere in the North End in Boston!! There's a little place I remember only opened for lunch....it was take out only and people would line up for a slice. They were actually big squares that took up the whole paper plate. Heaven.
They don't call it Little Italy for nothin'.

I go to Chicago and go to Pizzeria Uno (the original, not the franchise) or Gino's, but I'm told that Duo and Giordano's are very good. I like deep dish. It's what I call "last meal" food -- if it was my last meal, that's what I would want to eat.
