I am buying a house, and all of the appliances are old, and need to be replaced. Does anyone have any suggestions for the best brand to buy?

Everyone will have good and bad stories for their particular brand but I have had good luck with Kenmore and Frigidare. Many of these brands are made by the same company with different names. I also like to see customer feedback on the item I am considering.

Sears.com still is the top retailer for appliances, and each one has a section for customer feedback.

Consumerreports.org also rates products independently. It does cost to have full access but it is well worth it if you are looking at buying just about anything. Many times however, they have free reports particularly on appliances. The cool thing is they are non-profit and when they test a product, they go in anonymously to a store, negotiate a deal and take it to the lab to test it. So it's not like they are getting sent a hand picked model that is guaranteed to perform well.

Now go get 'em!

I would go with either GE, Hotpoint, or Frigidaire reason being I bought all new Whirlpool appliances in 2005 an exactly 1 month after the warranty ran out; during a one week period my oven quit ant the part to repair it was $180, my Ice maker broke an additional $120, the belt on the dryer broke and with the service call to repair it came to $214.20, and it still wasn't over the motor on the washer shorted out and it was cheaper to replace the entire washer than it was to fix it. Now don't get me wrong I may have just had a good run of bad luck I don't know. How ever I did contact the people at Whirlpool and they were very sympathetic but they would do absolutely nothing else the warranty had ran out; I still sometimes think that the appliances that I bought were manufactured to break after a short time. What led me to buy this brand was having had them in the past and I had never once before had any complaint they had worked extremely great. Who knows I might even give them another chance in the future.

It depends on your budget. One thing you can do is research the brands through Consumer Reports magazine. You might even be able to find this information online by typing in something like: Kitchen appliances - ratings. Or you could try researching individual brands.

My appliances are old, too. They are GE and original to the house, built in 1984. Everything - stove, refrigerator, and dishwater, are still working just fine. When I get ready to replace them, I'll go to Lowe's or Home Depot and look at the mid-range priced appliances. Then I'll research the brands, and make a choice. Chances are, the GE brand falls in the middle, and that may be my best bet.

Maytag, I've had all my appliances for 18 years and they are still in good condition. I've never had to call a repairman.
