At the current time, it is almost 100% guaranteed that WinXP will continue to offer better perfomance than Vista for World of Warcraft. There are several factors here to consider, but consider these points:
First, Windows Vista has a huge hardware overhead. This means that less physical resources are going to be available to applications when running under Vista. This is why the hardware specifications on Vista have gone up over time, to accomodate for this artificial OS overhead.
Second, as of right now, most video card drivers available for Vista are still in Beta or have just come out of Beta (and are thus First Revision). This means that they have yet to be widely publicly tested and may or may not offer poor framerates. This was very true in the Vista Beta *and* RTM releases, and Nvidia did not release an WHQL driver until January 5th/2007. At that time when I was testing the Vista Beta, framerates in Warcraft were roughly dropped by half over what you would get from XP.
Third, your Hardware is really more of your concern when playing WoW. Never, ever, upgrade your OS in the hopes it will make your applications run smoother. Hardware and more physical processing power will always be where the difference is truly made. If you're worried about WoW performance , upgrade your PC hardware and leave the OS alone. Make sure your drivers and DirectX version are up to date and you should be golden.
Just fyi, I've been a PC/Network tech for over 12 years, run a WoW Guild, and have tested WoW under the Vista Beta and Release versions. It runs better in XP, regardless of hardware, in my experience.

Nope.
It makes no difference.
If you want a big difference in performance...
1. Get more RAM on your PC. WOW eats RAM.
2 Get a better internet connection (Verizone FIOS Fiber Optic to the house ROCKS!)
3. Get Burning Crusade and GET YOUR TIER 5 ARMOR!
: )
Have fun.

Yeah the diff. in WoW when you upgrade ur comp is insane. I upgraded 512mb Ram to 1Gb Ram and to a better processor 2.8Ghz to a Dual Core 1.6Ghz proc. and WoW runs pretty good. I rarely get lag with that.
