Is it the media?
WHY does the media think skinny women are attractive? Why do men? How did it start?
I think being plump used to be good, correct? And then people started to want to be thin. What made it that way?

But WHY do people look in the mirror, see lots of fat, and think it is a bad thing? I mean, even with the belly shirt explanation. WHY don't they want fat to show? Because they don't want people knowing how fat they are because it is a bad thing. WHY is it a bad thing?

I think the whole fad started in the 80's. They started showing those extra skinny models like Kate Moss in those ads and stuff. Of course there was Twiggy in the 60's so I don't really know...

Even the pressure is on younger girls(a.k.a me).I have some friends who are nice and skinny and healthy and then go around complaining that their to fat, I mean im not so happy about the weight i am right now but i don't go around whining about how fat i am i do things about it exercise, eating right etc. But i think all this came from the media and the from peer pressure. If you were smart enough to ignore it from the media you'd still get a helping from your friends. But i think that everyone is beautiful in there own way but if your not happy with yourself you should do something about it not to cry out for attention from your friends and make everything worse that it seems.

basically all those ads, other people's perspectives and so on..
women tend to be vain and wanted to feel bautiful most of the time.
from the media it was often depicted that beautiful and skinny people were the one who plays as someone who is confident, gorgeous and all other positive aspects...
of course people's comments affects too.. especially men.
they think that skinny women have more sex appeal .. and from their comments women came to think that being skinny is the best..

basically fat, skinny, tall, petite are all just a trend thing..
they come and goes .. like in reinassence time.. male prefer plump female and in the 20 th century, being skinny or anorexic is the new trend.. perhaps in the next twenty years.. something new and different might change the current trend..
who knows?

Plump used to be good a while ago. The media sends women the message that having a little fat is bad [we all have some form of fat] and causes our self-esteem to go down.

It's not the media. I know how I tick instinctively and I'm attracted to women who are thin and not too tall.
I think fat indicates laziness and gluttony to me. Women who are fat almost certainly have more problems. I'd perceive them as weak willed and thus dissatisfied with themselves.
I once read that used car sales men go crazy with joy when a fat guy enters the lot because you can sell him anything at any price.
Sexually, I think my instinct is that I want to grab a girl and throw her around, not so dissimilar to the way you can play and bond with a child when it's still small enough to be thrown around. You automatically laugh a lot and it shows how close, comfortable and trusting you are with each other. Also she will be really comfortable with being naked, which again is important for intimacy. Being thin also seems to suggest energy and sportiness to my instinct.
I totally understand all the pro-ana girls because it's really true that being thin is so important for the mating game, although I really don't like this instinct because it does injustice to the wonderful and fun characters of so many great girls, just because they're a little overweight.

I wasn't going to answer, but I noticed how many replies basically said, 'because being fat is bad'.

This would have been fine if the original poster had asked, 'why do women to be slim and healthy', but that wasn't the question was it. Being skinny, i.e. underweight is not healthy or attractive. Obviously some here are not able to comprehend the question or can only see things in black and white.

The media classes skinny women as attractive because in Hollywood, film directors and producers wanted the men to look big and strong and the women to look small and delicate. Now, the men are going to extremes to bulk up, but at the same time, the women are going to extremes to slim down to excessively low and unhealthy weights, so they look vulnerable and delicate on camera when alongside their big, strong male co-star.............

And once the media starts portraying this as the norm, it is easy for vulnerable, young girls to be influenced to believe this is how they should look. Scary but true.

HTH : )

Hmm. I personally want to be skinny so that I can look really good in the clothes I wear. I find that no matter how good my taste in fashion is I look ridiculous in everything because I'm too fat. And I'm a size 6.
I think at least part of it has to do with the media.
The average Amercan woman is a size 14. Whereas the average model is a 0 or 2. How can we compete?
Curves used to be something to be proud of. They used to be a sign of womanhood. And now we're all supposed to look like prepubescent boys.

not all skinny women do that and not all plus size women are hatters of skinny women and the ones that says something about the other are lacking maturity ... once they grow up and get over themselves they will learn that they can be friends that its whats on the inside of the person that really matters and not looks or apperances , after all one day we all will be old wrinkled and grey haired does that mean we cant have younger friends ? lol ...

All the ads for clothing and the models. plus the clothing themselves. If you go shopping a see a really cute belly shirt, you're not gonna buy it if you're 250lbs. You want to be smll enough to look good in the cute clothes.
