The short answer is..... Northern Rhodesia
Zambia was formerly known as North Rhodesia and was a state within The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, along with Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and Nyasaland (now Malawi).
In 1963 the federation was disolved, and Northern Rhodesia became the Rebublic of Zambia in 1964.
Zambia came to be known as such from the Zambezi River.

Formerly Northern Rhodesia, the country was named after the Zambezi river when it became independent on 24 October 1964. At that time, Kenneth Kaunda became the country's first president. Zambia, officially the Republic of Zambia, is a landlocked country in southern Africa. It borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania on the north-east, Malawi on the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia to the south, and Angola on the west.
