Try putting in a dish of kitty litter & close the case. You may need to do this for a couple of days (changing the litter) but kitty litter should soak up the weird smell. I have used this method when trying to get smells out of old boxes and closets & it's worked great.

Try putting naphthalene balls in it for a few days, or spray it with an air freshener, close the lid and keep it closed for a few days.

Try sprinkling some baking soda in it. Bicarbonate soaks up smells, so it might work.
