I was driving to a diner with a black friend of mine and this guy moved to the intersection to make a right and he blocked traffic, my friend drove her car around him and shook her head and he yelled a horrible slur at her! At first I didn't know what he said- that is .. i didn't understand what he called her meant. When she told me, I felt horrible- I love a little suburban town and I've never heard things like that.
She took it really well, I said that he was a jerk and I was sorry he said that and she kind of shruged it off and said " whatever people say that S*%& all the time."
Has this ever happened to you- how do you react?

I don't know what upset me more, the fact that he was so quick to call her that- or the fact that she was used to it.

Yes, but only once, BTW I am an immigrant, and the slur was said in anger, for me to go back to the country where I came from.
That is OK, no big deal, it was said in anger, many times people say things when they are upset which they do not mean. I know I have said things that I should not have said.
Do not worry, your friend is not offended.
Americans do not realize they are more tolerant than most other countries of the world. In my countrry of birth if I move 50 miles, people will start to discriminate openly and on my face. Do not feel guilty, your forefathers have made this country best place in the world to live, for an outsider.
Thanks.

It has been to me on a couple of occasions. A boy in my class when I was young called me a n*****r, but i just told the teacher and that was the end of it. Another time and boy made a comment about my parents and me being bi-racial and I was upset at first and then I did allot of thinking....People who say those things only want to get a negative reaction and when that happens they win, if I just walk away and have no reaction, I win. Ignorance only has power if you let it.

Well, I'm a black girl with really light skin and when I was in 9th grade my classmates used to make fun of me for it. They would call me yellow girl and say I blended in with the walls because the walls were a light creamy color. They basically acted like they had never seen a light-skinned person in their lives.
The other day at my college there were two black women walking by and they had a toddler with them. He stopped in front of the bench I was sitting on and was just starring at me. One of the women got impatient and said, "You wanna go home with her? Come on, she too red. You need a dirty red girl." And she took his hand and led him away. I took offense to this and I considered it a slur because she said it in a way that was degrading. I love my skin color and I'm very happy with it.

yea the first time when I was a kid I was walking from school and somebody yelled the "N" word from a car and kept driving.
It was a revelation that racism still exist because I had only seen stuff like that in movies.

Only one time but It was not a big deal.Nothing to get dramatic over. One time this Caucasian woman and her son was passing me and my mom in the store, then as we were passing she told her son "Get over on this side, were passing the blacks."
Now I can understand If she just told her son to get over on that side but she had to acknowledge that we were black. That was kind of weird.

Yeah, sad to say but everybody has probably been insulted because of their race. But honestly I don't care. It just makes the person who insulted you look like a dumbass, so I just laugh it off and pity them.
