I am writing a debate and I am aruging that high schools should start at 8:30 insetad of 7:30 becuase it is more benefical. But the opposing side has said that if u start school late, u get out late, and u miss out on more things. I need some strong arguemnts agiainst this. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Awhile ago, I saw a news report about this. They were reporting that starting high school later was better for the students. I don't remember all the facts from that report other then there was less sleep deprivation and more learning going on and that teens are actually built to sleep later. Most schools start so early because of busing schedules. Apparently, there are schools that are realizing this, but I think it will be a long time before it is a widespread idea to start high school later. If you do a google search "high school starting time", you will find quite a few links on this topic.

The only reason why some districts start their high school sessions so early is because they are on more than one bus schedule. They may have a huge amount of students to transport so they break up the bus times into 2 or three tiers-- High school, junior high and elementary. They reason that the high schools should start early so the students can get to after school employment or activities and sports. I think this is a bunch of you know what! Back in my day any extra curricular activities or part time work was done on the weekends. Besides even if a student wanted to work during the week it should only be in the evenings perhaps only for 2 evenings. Kids need to do homework not be employed!. Schools should not have to take on the burden of being responsible for the students livelihood and extra curricular activities.
