I believe it was Sudaki and a Thousand Cranes

I forgot about that title too, it was memorable because it told the story of a girl exposed to leukemia. She was known as a great runner but later fell sick and was admitted to the hospital where she died. She befriend another sick boy through the process and her class was instructed to fold crane-shaped origamis wishing her a thousand more years to live

Can it have been the book about Sadako, a Japanese girl, who developed cancer in the 1950s because she grew up in Hiroshima and there was still radioactivity left after the bomb was dropped ten years earlier?
