Unfortunately, the peso is worth very very little. I actually just arrived home from the Philippines after visiting my family there and well the people there carry HUGE BIG WALLETS filled with bills. It's not uncommon to spend 1000 pesos at a time. Somethings are very cheap but one peso cannot buy you anything. You need to calculate about how much u will be spending a day there in the Philippines and then multiply that by 50 which is the US dollar to Peso exchange rate. this number fluctuates... so don't quote me on it... Also, a little extra cash doesn't hurt. i hope you enjoy the Philippines, it's a beautiful country. All the best.

Well, depending on what you want, you can get a haircut for as cheap as 30P. I would recommend that you get a housekeeper. a live-in housekeeper with meals costs about 3,000P/month, and when she goes shopping at the local market, she will be quoted the actual price. Filipinos think that ALL foreigners are rich, and double the price just for you.
About the money itself... since Filipinos do not earn much money, the coins get to be as small as 5 centavos (they have a hole in the center and make wonderful washers) Largest denomination is 1,000 Peso (and peso today opened at 49.1P/US$). Because big money is so scarce, if you go to a store and pay with a 100P bill, you should expect the salesperson will run from store to store to get you change. In the malls the prices are comparable to the rest of the world and you can get all the comforts of home there (the malls are huge).

My house rent in Leyte for a large 2 bedroom modern house is 4,000 pesos per month. A taxi ride in Cebu City across town is about 75 pesos. Everything is very cheap here - come on over.

an average meal in the philippines is about 75 peso, which is about $1.50....everything there is so cheap. you and your wife can probably get a decent hotel for about $20 a day. whatever you do, dont drink the water, buy bottled water. you can even get a driver for all day that will take u wherever u want to go for about $25 a day, sice gas is about $.75 a gallon. enjoy and god bless. oh yeah, bring the kids candy, give as much as u can, they really need it over there...

Well, we should start off with the exchange rate first. The US dollar is fluctuating at $1 = P48 to 50. So to make things easier let's say $1 = P50.
A McDonalds Big Mac Meal is about P89.
A 2 piece chicken meal at Jollibee is about P115.
A Pizza at all the known pizza places (largest) would cost around P350 - P500.
1/2 kilo of ground beef at SM costs around P55 - P75.
6-7 pieces of porkchop at SM would cost around P100.
And depending on how long you will stay (and let's say you already have a place to stay for free and only need to think about food) a $1000 would be more than enough if you are going to stay for a month.
I myself eat out everyday 3 times a day and take a cab to work. And I spend about P6000 - P10,000 every month on food/transpo alone. If I had P50,000 every month i'd still have P40,000 to save/pay rent with.

It depends on wherer you're going cause at some city you can get more for your money. But honestly, you can't buy anything for 1 Peso...just probably a pack of peanuts but trying asking around and you can probably budget your trip. You can post questions here or you can IM for questions that I can help you with.

1 PhP? probably 1 candy...it's not even enough to buy 1 stick of cigarette. However, there are still lots of things you could get for a much cheaper price -- compared of course to the US. For example, a complete meal at a fastfood chain, i.e. McDonalds, would cost about USD 2.50. But if you don't mind eating at road restaurants -- that same amount could buy you a hearty meal for 2 people already. Even the high-end fine dining restaurants are about 1/4 as costly as that in the US (according to my american friends, of course). If you have any more questions re: Phils, you and your wife are welcome to send me a message and it would be my pleasure to assist you to the best of my ability. God bless on your trip!

and so on, things are cheap i pay for my fiancee a housekeeper while she is pregnant for only 60 dollars a month and thats pretty decent rate.

As a general rule, $100 a day is normal budget for any vacation. But since you're doing your mission and I guess, accomodation is provided, even $10 a day will be alright. Mind you, if you're on a mission, Filipinos will always welcome you with hospitality. They may even prepare the best food for you.
Welcome to the Philippines!
Mabuhay!
