the Industrial Revolution answer is A#1.....before 1860 we were a fairly backward country.....by the Spanish American War of 1898 we were a major industrial power, on equal footing with England and France and WAY ahead of Germany and Japan......and thusly had the technology.....mainly a Navy..and the economy.....steel, coal, railroads, shipping.....to play with the Big Boys
But the SINGLE biggest thing would be the North winning the Civil War and America going into the 1870, 80, and 90s as one country, not 24 United States and 13 Confederate States and maybe even a third country in California, Colorado New Mexico.. you could even argue that a North, resentful of England and with a large Irish and German immigrant population, could have allied with Germany in WW1 and the South, with its cotton crop vital to England's mills, allied with England and World War 1 could have been fought in Pennsylvania and Virginia as well as France and Belgium......

Before the Mayflower even came to the new world the government sent over many clothes and blankets infested with small pox to help weed out the indian population. Even in the records from the ship they talk about empty camps and much death. The pilgrams also robed graves and tool the seed corn buried for spring planting. Look for things on Discovery or history channel web site. There was also the James town settlement. Findings prove that the colony went slowely mad from drinking briny water. You can find out many interesting facts on sidis.net, William Sidis was a formost athourity on the True american History. He went around to town halls and read many historys not printed he also talked to many survivors of Indian cultures. The tribes and the States was never published but can be found at the web site mentioned above.

Well, and this is a serious answer, just thinking this through, but the whole idea that you could come to this country and really start over was revolutionary in itself. Old world Europeans were restrained by class, however, for the first 100 years or so, "Americans" weren't subject to those constraints. Don't get me wrong there were still classes, servants, masters, etc. but there was the possiblity of change--something that didn't exist in Europe. So....having that idea in mind, understanding that people saw their futures in a different way, it is really not so surprising that "America" rose from the ashes of a revolution--from free thinkers willing to stand up for what they believed in. That basic precept has really dictated how America has changed over its history and how it relates to other countries.

Settling of the American west. The westward movement from 1800 to 1900. The gold rush of 1849. The purchase of the Lousiana Territory. The purchase of Alaska. The Gasden purchase. War with Mexico. The war with Spain. War of 1812.
Just few minor events.

Check out this link. It is about the Revolutionary War which, in my opinion, would be the single most important event in the history of the this country. No revolution, no America! You might also want to check out this link:

It is about the Civil War (obviously). This was also monumental in the development of this nation and dealt with much more than just slavery as we are often lead to believe in history class. Hope this helps! Best wishes!
