The geography of eastern Canada is complicated. Only Nova Scotia and Newfoundland border the open Atlantic. New Brunswick, PEI, and Quebec only have coastlines on the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The coastline of New Hampshire is quite short and is not shown accurately on maps with insufficient detail, and those of Connecticut and New York are only on Long Island Sound. Alaska is not part of the lower 48 states, but it does have an extensive Pacific coastline. The Gulf coast of the southeastern United States is not considered the east coast.

Even though the United States portion of the Gulf coast is not considered the east coast, the Gulf of Mexico is the only eastern water boundary Mexico has, so those states must be considered for Mexico. On the west coast, Sonora and Sinaloa border the Gulf of California rather than the open Pacific. Of the Mexican east coast states, only Quintana Roo has an eastward-facing coast on the Atlantic (technically the Caribbean); all of the others have coasts only on the Gulf of Mexico.
