Hello Jon. I agree that many things that Ali said during the late 1960's-early 1970's were openly racist. I am an Ali fan but the comments that he made can't be excused, they were anti white and were black supremacist. In addition to the comments he made he also gave a speech at a KKK meeting, advocating the separation of the races. This was all very wrong, there is a saying "when you face the dragon you have to be careful not to become the dragon". In his fight against racists Ali became just as racist as those he fought against. It is wrong to blame everything that is bad in the world on white people, just as it would be to blame al the bad on any race. There is good and bad in all races and walks of life. However in his defense he was young and poorly educated and Elijah Muhammad manipulated him. The Nation of Islam fed him propaganda and he naively believed and preached it. In the mid 70's Ali moved away from the nation of Islam and converted to Sunni Islam. Nowadays he no longer preaches that the white man is the devil, in a recent interview he said that a devil can be any colour. I think this is why the media exempt him, because he has changed his beliefs and due to the great things he has done they forgive him. Also maybe he is given somewhat of a free pass on those remarks because in his younger days blacks were treated very badly by whites in America. If a boxer today was to preach that the white race, or any race for that matter, were devils they would be lambasted by the media and the public, rightly so. However Ali has attained legendary status and due to his change of heart they have forgiven him.

Unless he died in the last few hours, Ali is still living. Although, he does have Parkinson's disease.
