Earth, the planet, is a place name--a proper noun. Proper nouns are always capitalized, hence 'Earth.' And since 'earth' as in dirt is a common noun, it is NOT capitalized. Hope that answered your question!:)

Earth with an "E" is the name of a planet. In this case Earth is a proper noun. Earth with an "e" (as in dirt) is a common noun.

Planets are proper nouns. We capitalize the name for the planet for the same reason we capitalize the word "Mars," and we leave earth (as in dirt) lowercase for the same reason we don't capitalize the word "grass."
