They say we footballers should not dive, slide tackle, take advantage of the ref's whistle, get yellow/red cards, etc... Which is true, but then they show players on their commercials, like Wayne Rooney who gets cards all the time, and C. Ronaldo, who many blame him for diving alot.

Since "Joga Bonito" is invented by nike, and they only do show players that wear nike accessories, don't you think "Joga Bonito" is just something for us to blow our money on?

Well, you're right in a way. However, those are just two of their players. For me, there's still quite a number of Nike players who really apply "Joga Bonito". They are Henry, Cannavarro, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Van Nistelrooy and Maldini to name a few. It just happens that these two players that you mentioned are the ones that are in the proverbial "hot-seat" right now so they attract more attention. For me the best example of Joga Bonito is Henry. He rarely dives, if ever he did dive. I mean, he hates divers and if he is hurt, he REALLY is HURT! So my point is, nothing is perfect in this world. Nike, even though they advocate playing beautifully, they still have some endorsers who don't live up their motto. But try to look at the bigger picture and you will see that Nike players are generally good examples of playing well and beautiful.

I totally agree with you... Rooney and C. Ronaldo have no idea what sportsmanship, honesty, and honor is on and off the pitch... Plus their skills are mediocre! I think joga bonito is a great way to bring fun and excitement to the masses and sell some nike goods at the same time... but I dont always agree with their players' selection...

No, I don't think so...Now, we not only use the term Joga Bonito in relation to Nike, but in relation to the game itself. The term has become sort of like a generalization...We don't use it for specific things anymore...It's become apart of the football community...Tons of fans use the term to describe the game itself. So, it's not like Joga Bonito is related only to Nike and we only use the term in relations to Nike...We use it all the time now.

Now of course not everyone uses it and not everyone thinks the game is beautiful, especially when we see cheating and diving and stuff...But you have to remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So, to some, even with some of the stuff going on in the game today, they still might see the game as beautiful while others may not.

hmm, wasn't it pele who coined the term? anyway, you’re saying its contradictory cuz it doesn’t conform to the realities of the game. but I don’t think there’s any sport that does not have an ugly side to it. in football, the good far outweighs the bad so I think it’s still joga bonito. as for nike, it co-opted the phrase ‘cuz its catchy enough to sell. and that's what they do, they sell stuff and getting stars like rooney and c. ronaldo whatever their reps are is good for business. that's the reality and i don't think that should detract from what the game is really all about.

It's true. I have thought about this too but on the other hand C.Ronaldo does play joga bonito when he is not diving. His footwork is amazing. but they also showcase Ronaldinho who is the definition of joga bonito.

They are basically wanting kids to see them more than a role model, but also to love what they are making commercials for, which is Nike. They just want to make a slogan to make kids like their "cool" products.

Why would they show other players who dont use nike products. They do that so they don't confuse people who buy nike products.
