Two possibilities for you.

Frog the horse that knew no master. Written by Colonel S. P. Meek. It's about a cavalry horse in Panama. It's a great picture of cavalry life on a foreign post in the 1930's from a fictional perspective. It's 297 pages, was written in 1933 and reprinted in 1954.

Dick Francis wrote a whole pile of mysteries. Quite a few were written before 1975 including Smoke Screen (1972), Dead Cert (1962), Nerve (1964), and For Kicks (1965). All are set mostly in England, except For Kicks which starts in Australia.

Ben Green also wrote a book called 1000 miles of Mustanging that takes place mostly in Mexico - it's more folk lore than true fiction. Or maybe I should say embellished non fiction.

All these books are available at Amazon or e-bay or through inner library loan.

Happy reading.

Well I am pretty sure that is the era that Pearl Buck wrote about in "The Good Earth" and her subsequent novels. Amy Tan also writes a great deal about Chinese history though her characters often are now living in America. So maybe one of them would do?

An excellent choice would be...Emipre of the Sun by J.G. Ballard.
