Les Miserables, Catcher in the Rye, Of Mice and Men, Dracula, Oliver Twist, Dante's Divine Comedy (there is a good translation by John Ciardi that retains the Rythm and the Rhyme), Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland (these last two... surprisingly dark), Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island, Cyrano de Bergerac, Jude The Obscure, Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, The Old Man and the Sea, The Yearling (will make you cry like a lost child in a department store!), Lord of the Rings, Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes (compilation of short stories!), The Fisherman and His Soul and other short stories by Oscar Wilde .... and for god's sake, don't read Moby Dick, no matter how classic it is....
