The 80s guys were just copying the 60s and 70s guys...the who, kiss...etc.
The guitars they broke were props....they would set down their favorite and pick up another which they would break. No one breaks their favorite guitar...it's your baby...more important and more a part of you than your girlfriend.

Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder are the only rock singers who I remember doing that, and it was in the early 90's.
Those two individuals in particular had problems with fame, society, and had awful childhoods. I'd suggest you look at the situation from the individual perspective and not generalize the whole group of rock singers as not being "aggressive."
Those two were "destructive," to some extent, but I think it was more of an individual thing, as I can't remember any other singers breaking stuff on stage.

The insurance expenses have gone up. The cost of equipment has sky-rocketed, OSHA restrictions, janitorial work after these concerts is often done at night when the building is closed. The employee must be able to work alone. The work may be hard. The employee may be exposed to irritating cleaning detergents. Janitors and Cleaners may be assigned to work shifts when 24-hour service is needed. The work is usually done inside buildings which are heated and well-lit. Sometimes they may work outdoors sweeping walkways and mowing lawns.Duties like dusting or sweeping require a lot of bending, stooping, and stretching. Police permits have increased in cost. Medical personnel have to be present and supervision must be adequate for all ages.
Generally speaking, it just doesnt pay to be violent rock star anymore. How times have changed, huh?

To celebrate my 35th birthday this weekend, I was watching some old videos on VH1 Classics. Vinny Vincent Invasion smashed their guitars and speakers. A guy on fire jumped off scaffolding and ran across stage.
My youngest son looked at the make-up and costumes and said, "Um, Dad! Those are guys! Aren't they?" My oldest said, "why did they smash their guitars? That was dumb."
I guess it's a generational thing.

Maybe that's the reason that most of those 80's rockstars haven't been heard from in 20 years.

Been there done that. It was new in the 80's. If someone did it now, they'd look like they were stuck in the 80's.

Because of the new Stupid POP Culture. They need to look good for parents and have great images. After they make good images, they turn slutty. Just like how there is no more REAL grunge, punk or hardcore anymore.

The majority of rock singers today don't have any passion about what they sing. Their music is not from the heart, it's from their manager's playbook.

It just lost its flair. I remember the first time I saw Alice Cooper, he came onto the stage carrying a garbage pail and tossed garbage at people. Sick.
