Geocaching...it's outdoorsy and after the initial investment of a GPS it's super-cheap and there's always one for you to find wherever you go.
It can be creative/artsy because you can design crazy containers (and get to try to get into the head of someone else if they've built a crazy container or creative puzzle)
It's equally challenging for all ages and my kids even like it. Beware...it is VERY addictive. After the first cache, you'll be hooked and looking for a "12 step program"...LOL

I'm not sure what you mean by a building project. I have tons of hobbies though, some are more portable and inexpensive than others. One thing I like to do is take a pad of good quality watercolor paper with me, and a pack of water color colored pencils. Then if you have a free minute anywhere you can sketch a picture and color it with the colored pencils and then later you can use paintbrushes and water to blend it. This is very inexpensive to start. You can get a good pad of paper for $5 or less and a nice set of watercolor colored pencils for anywhere from $4 to $20.
Another fun hobby is making your own greeting cards. You can go so many directions with that! You can get into stamping and embossing, or you can get into cutting and punching shapes out of paper, or you can get stickers and embellishments. Its endless what you can try!
Another one is jewelry making, or beading. You can get supplies for that at just about any hobby store and they can be as cheap or expensive as you want depending on what types of things you buy.
Another one I'm just getting into is working with polymer clays, like Fimo and Sculpey. The things you can do with them are really spectacular.
Like I said, lots of fun stuff to do!

Digital Scrapbooking! You can pick up software on ebay for less than $20.00. I recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements, any version will do :) There is a lot of free information on the internet to help you learn digital scrapbooking and there are also lots of sites that allow you to download digital papers and embellishments for FREE! Simply type "Free digital scrapbooking" into your yahoo search bar, there are thousands of websites offering information or free "stuff". Good Luck!

The key word is "INTO'. Try speleology. Go into where no man has gone before. Period. Go to caves.com, do the research, &
learn from recreational organization membership. You pay the
dues, earn respect, & after 25 years one day walk alone into eternal night. No free rides. You can't buy a ticket to go there.
Get some, uh-huh, & maybe someday you'll discover solitary
footprints quite cold within cold calcite or caldera chambers ...

Scrapbooking! I love it, but it can get expensive if you don't set limits, because there are a lot of neat things to buy that you really don't need.
Or if you're not an indoors type person, buy a horse. Horseback riding is a great activity that boosts satisfaction and energy levels.

Plastic Canvas is really neat as well, it's similar to crochet, there's yarn and needles, but it's pretty inexpensive, and fun, it can be simple and brainless too. Or you can get really creative with it as well. I enjoy it and I know that there are patterns online you can find, and it tends to sell well at craft fairs.

Learn to knit or crochet. It's in fashion right now, it's cheap, you can make stuff for yourself and your friends, it's portable, and there are lots of free online patterns.
