23y/2 - 5y/8 = 87
you can get rid of fractions by multiplying everything by 8
8*(23y/2) - 8*(5y/8) = 8*87

92y - 5y = 696
87y = 696
divide both sides by 87
y = 696/87
y = 8

Solution: y=8

I'm such a point whore for answering this :)

(23/2)y - (4/8)y = 87 ->
92y - 4y = 348 ->
88y = 348 ->
y = 87/22
