A portfolio is any work you have done. I've applied to RISD and Art Center (yes, I got into both =P), as a graphic designer though, but the type of work should still be the same. I'm not sure about FIT, but most schools I know have a list of suggestions to put in your portfolio.

There are three things that I always tell my peers that are applying to a art/design school and that's to put in:

1. personal work - they usually would like to know the type of person you are and style through your work, so include any personal projects that you are fond of.

2. experience - what experience have you had? done anything commercially? for events? etc.

3. foundation - not sure if this applies to fashion, but a lot of schools i know would like you to have a good set of basic skills in drawing, 2d, and 3d applications.

Also, a lot of schools loooove seeing sketchbooks and drawings, so don't be afraid to throw one of your books in there.

Schools also have "Portfolio Days" where many of the famous art institutes gather and look at your portfolio. They'll give you advice on what to work on, what to include, and what to expect from the school. You can pretty much ask them anything there, so I suggest you check one of those out.

Hope that helps.

A portfolio is used to showcase all your work, Only put your best designs, drawing etc in it.. I would buy a professional black portfolio case and put all your work in plastic sleeves in that, take photo's of all fashion designs you have made and completed and place them next to the original sketch idea and maybe include a paragraph on explaining each piece (e.g. type of outfit, where you would wear it, why you chose the colour, fabric etc.. how the piece makes you feel, what changes or improvements would you make next time etc...) you could also include a page with different samples of fabric on it where you could explain what types of clothing it is suitable for, washing instructions, sewing compatibility etc..) also to show off you knowledge on certain fabrics aswell... Take your time with a portfolio and don't rush it as you want it to look the best that you can make it, get a few people to look through your portfolio and get them to offer suggestions and criticism on it also.. and lastly make sure every peice of work that you are proud of, you keep or take a pic so you can upgrade and re-arrange you portfolio accordingly.. Good Luck!

It is a book containing 8-12 of your best work. It comes in any size. But it should be a quick read. They will just flip through it like some fashion magazine on their coffee break.

It should be like a musician's album where there seems to be a well thought-out order from one song to the next. Everybody drops off their $75 black book bought at the artsy fartsy store, so try to stand out.
