It all depends on how much you want to spend. My fiance and I just bought a tempurpedic memory foam and we absolutely love it but the are quite costly.

You can look on the street, many times people throw them away with Plastic slipcovers on them zipped up but you have to be ready to snag them. On the other side of the coin I've purchased the sleep number bed and the air was consrticted by a thick foam containment which kept it from being bouncy. I now have an air mattress with a boxspring size air cushion underneath. A wire button remot which fills it when it loses air already plugged in. the saving about 1300.oo dollars The box spring like air cushion is larger than the mattress for support hence takes up more room, and I think was meant for guest kind of a bed.
I would try the simmons sleepair a traditional mattress with the air poket in the middle. The sleep number is a glorified slipcover, some hi density foam wrapped around a rubber floatatioin thing hooked up to a blow dryer with a digital number display, with some celebs who recieved a free bed for the testimony. Sorry bionic woman

I can't say enough about Tempurpedic (www.tempurpedic.com) - it's literally a magic bed. Our doctor recommended it after my husband broke his back. That was in '01. I started sleeping better almost immediately, it took him a few weeks. In the last 5 years my mother, then my uncle, sister and her husband, then my father (parents divorced), and too many friends to count have all bought one and everyone raves. One of my friends just bought another one for their 3 year old. You wake up more refreshed, sleep better.. it's honestly hard to sleep anywhere else again!
the only downside I've heard, although nobody I know has experienced it, is it "off gassing" when it is new and causing problems to those chemically sensitive. Again I personally have never experienced it, or known anyone it's happened to.. but I have read about it on the internet.
As for the price, it should last 20 years.. so for the king size (around 2 grand) that's about 100 bucks a year, or 1 night in a hotel... I'd pay 10 times that for the great sleep I've gotten over the past 5 years. Good luck!

I really liked the Serta Perfect Sleeper but settled on an Orginal Mattress Factory bed due to availablity in a king size.
Found out later that OFM makes theres with cotton batting which sounds nice until you lay on it for a while. We've had it for 2 years now and it feels older than that. The bed has indentions where we sleep and I've been told it's due to the cotton. If it wa synthetic, the 'fluff' would still be there.

We spent several years sleeping on cheap, no name mattresses,
but finally broke down and bought a Sealy last year. We can't believe the difference. I know that they are quite a bit more expensive but in the long run you need to get a name brand, quality mattress.

My daughter has a temperpedic foam mattress
and she says it has improved her sleep and lessened her neck and back problems. One of my close friends says the same, so I may save for one of my own!
I currently have a Spring Aire. I bought it at a furniture store. It was pretty costly and I'm not sure it's better than other similar mattresses.

I don't know about brand names, but you haven't LIVED until you have slept on a pillow-top mattress. It is probably the most comfortable night's sleep you will have. These are expensive though, but so worth the money.

I bought a Tempurpedic mattress, in '01 -
They were pricey then (probably more so now), but well worth every penny spent. . .I saved a few hundred by NOT buying the foundation - using the older one from my previous bed.
If this brand is too expensive?
I used to buy nothing but Beautyrest.

There are many good brands out there. I myself have one of the memory foam type and I love it. Especially when the dog, cat and all of the kids decide that my bed is fort mommy and I am trying to sleep. It really does live up to it's promise.
