I own a Compaq Presario laptop (40GB harddrive, 224mb RAM, 787mhz processing speed) - it runs damn slow!
My friend has a 70GB laptop, with 512mb RAM and 1.8ghz processing speed.
I know only a little about computers (and most of that I have forgotten!!) so I'd really like to know if I'm best upgrading the RAM or the processor (if that can be done)?
Also, what minimum RAM would you recommend? Adding another 224mb to get me to the 512mb or going even higher?

I've contacted some companies that do laptop upgrades and they've recommended getting the laptop serviced also - would this be a smart investment?
Overall, am I better to try to upgrade this one or buy a new one. If the latter, any idea where I can get a fairly cheap one from?

Your friend laptop processor has twice your speed. Unless i miss my guess you're still using a Pentium 3 processor and your friend has a Pentium 4. If that's the case i don't think you can upgrade your cpu to a P4 like your friend. The best you can do is add more Ram. I would recommend 1GB or Ram. Replace your 40Gb hard drive with a faster hard drive will help too.

i recommend upgrading your RAM to about 512mb..
but if you're a gamer, or a person who works using a lot of programs opened at one time, 512 can become a bit slow after prolonged use. for that, i recommend getting a 1gb RAM
and you only really need to add just a little bit to the cost of a 512 RAM.. it's a sweet deal man
it's gonna be a long time before you upgrade again, that's for sure

Your processor is most likely an older version than your friends. Therefore his/hers runs way faster because it was made to run faster. Also their memory is twice as large allowing more information to be stored for quick access. You could update both (if possible) But it might just be better to wait until you can afford a newer laptop with a 1.8 Ghz processor and 512 memory.

you may need to upgrade your processing speed depending on the applications you use, well for your ram you should have a minimum of 512MB, and to minimize space in your laptop try to get ccleaner from the net.... a 40GB harddrive is ok, so do not bother about the harddrive....

you need both...
a faster processor will help the most in your case, but RAM will help as well.

I would recommend more than 512, but it depends on your needs. its always better to have more than not enough. Go with a gig or RAM

more memory makes opening up programs faster. It boots up faster too.
