The procedures and assessments that you are allowed to do will depend on the individual crew you are riding along with. Even though you are not certified, you will probably be expected to at least obtain vital signs. On my EMT-Basic ride alongs, I got to get vitals, help carry equipment, spike IV bags, help apply the EKG pads for the cardiac monitor, administer oxygen, and other assorted tasks.

Just relax, and try not to be too nervous. If you have any questions, feel free to ask (but it's sometimes better to wait until after the call, esp. if it's a difficult one).

If you don't understand how to do something that they ask you to do, admit it, and ask for help, rather than do it wrong. On my first ride along, I had never seen that type of glucometer and had to ask how to use it.

Depending on the call volume of your city, you might have a lot of waiting around at the station with nothing to do. It might be helpful to bring your textbooks to study, or a good book to occupy your time while you wait for a call.

Otherwise, have fun! (and be careful around IV lines - it's really easy to trip over one and rip it out)

Be prepared to act, not just observe. Make yourself useful. My first ride-along I got to do CPR -- it was pretty cool. Also, depending on where you are, be prepared for a little boredom, too. Only 3% of all EMS calls turn out to be true emergencies, so don't be too nervous/excited when the call comes in.

Good luck!
