I used a #1 pencil on the SAT reasoning test... do you think the SAT scantron machines are updated enough to read #1 pencil lead (slightly darker than #2 pencil lead)? I made sure to fill in the bubbles darkly, neatly, and fully.

Well they ask that you only use #2 pencils. At least you used lead and not ink. It should read it. Don't quote me on that though. I quess you really won't know until you get your results back.

I'm pretty sure it'll work. The only difference between the numbers is how thick and dark the lead is.

The marks just have to be dark enough for the machine to pick it up, and #1 pencils are the darkest kind, so really, that would be the best choice (Although, you'd end up making a huge smudge if you tried to erase it. That's probably why they tell you to use #2)

You can use anything that will be dark enough for the optical reader to "see" it. #2 is recommended because it fills in dark, but can also be erased completely. Ink works just fine too, just don't make a mistake.
