NO. NO. and NO. It just does not work that way. Should a career criminal have the ability to work in a daycare or a child molester. And only if you put yourself in a position to serve others should you have an obligation toward others.

No, look at the world, your neighborhood, look in your own household. Of course every one is not equal.
Yes everyone should have equal rights, only a fascist would disagree.
Yes we all have obligations to each other, we should care for those weaker and less fortunate than ourselves and do our best to make sure that everyones rights are respected.
We don't need Gods to tell us this, or men claiming to speak for Gods.
This is basic common sense.

No people are not equal. No if God doesn't given men rights (equal ones at that) than there is no basis for them, just the opinion of men which differ (remember they are claiming equality. People only have an obligation if God says so. I am my brothers keep or let they brother keep himself?
PS equal means the same. I get 1 vote you get one vote its the same. If you get 2 and I get 1 it is not equal. That's double talk.
My point is thus, if God gave men rights (He made man and the universe and has the right to given men rights and obligation and or not to. That is why the US founders put into the D. of Independence the quotes of political philosopher John Locke. "Endowed by our creator with..." It is a claim to authority, one that was higher than that of King George. For if there is no recognition of God and or higher authority than nothing that man sets up can have any authority. Instead at the best we can have democratic agreement which said slavery is O.K. and still says that abortion is OK. At worst you have some grass eating king that puts men both just and unjust to death on his whims. The two extremes with out an appeal to higher authority have in themselves no moral value and thus people are left with or without rights based on the whims of other men.
It is just that "common sence" which in Arabia says honor killing a victim of rape is good. (I don't think this comes from Islam by the way.) And here we think thats a bad thing. Ask two people in the street if affirmative action is dicriminatory or not and you will likly get two answers. "Common Sence" is only esteamed by Americans becuase they all think that when someone says common sence and when they say it that they are talking about the same thing, they are not. The Jesus of Islam and the Jesus of the Bible and the Jesus of the Mormons and the Jesus of the Catholics and that of the Neo-arminians is not the same Jesus but all different so is it with common sence, its just a game of samantics.
"We should take care of the weak and poor".
From a Christian view point this is consistent.
If you hold a Darwinian view of the world however, than Hitler's tratment of the Jews was also consistent, becuase he having no higher authority than himself thought the Jews were the problem with the world so he logicaly did what was consistent with his world view.
I said and still say, Without ultimit authority (God) it is up to the average Alexander to chose to submit to the Persians (men) or make his own empire at the expence of other men.
I wish post-christian humanists would stop stealing Christian values. They don't make sense for your world view.

Equal in what sense?
We aren't all equally kind or intelligent or talented in this or that thing (or anything).
But, we all have equal rights, and the right to equal treatment under the law.
This is in theory, of course, in reality we are not treated equally in that sense.

Everyone is equal (that does not mean everyone is the same, though) and of course everyone should have equal rights.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "do people have an obligation toward others?"

We are suppose to be, but look around you, you can tell it isn't so. As for an obligation towards others, God didn't actually mean to share your money, but to be there for those who are in need, such as a shoulder to cry on, clothes if theirs are tattered through no fault of their own, a kind word and a smile. Your neighbor is anyone you meet, not just the one who lives next door to you. The most giving people in the world tend to be the poorest.
