Yes you should! I understand exactly what you're talking about. My family has pretty much the same racial mixture as yours, except my grandfather on my fathers side is half Native American/half black and my granddad from my mom side is a mulatto man. However, I look black, and my parents and grandparents always taught me to relate to black culture because here in the South, people still feel that if you have any black blood in you, you're black. (This is an exact quote from what my grandfather's Uncle said to him one day in his youth, "You may think you're white because your dad is a white man, but you're still a n.i.gger to me and I don't want no n.i.gger around me"). And so this is what my grandfather taught my parents, that no matter how light-skinned you may be your stilled considered a *******. And thats how our parents raised us. But in todays society you can claim all of your families diverse cultures, don't be ashamed. The days of racism are slowing disappearing in America, which is truly great. But be aware that their are still millions of people, black and white, that think if you have any black ancestry that you're black.

Wow.
Identity crisis, what do you mean by Pure Black?
Do you really mean you are claiming to be an American of untainted (pure) African ancestry.
Because Africa is the biggest inhabited continent on the planet, you can fit the USA into the Sahara desert.
On the Continent there are dozens of countries, the peoples skin colors range from off white to midnite black, there are distinct species with different skin coloration's, google up some pictures of Africans from different parts and you will see what I mean.
So It's not skin color, it's ancestry which seems to be the issue here.
I would suggest that you do one of those DNA trace things, they can tell you which part of Africa your (black) ancestors came from.
Then the 'pure black' thing just wont matter anymore.
You will be able to proudly state your origins.
White Americans don't say oh I'm of European descent, they say I'm of Italian or Polish or whatever COUNTRY their ancestors hailed from. You need to be able to say my ancestral homeland is Ghana or Mali or whatever.
Check out the links
Hope this helps, I know a lot of people it has.
Good Luck

Nothing wrong with saying you're pure black. I've got Blackfoot and Cherokee blood on both sides of my family, but since it isn't enough to qualify me for any Native American scholarships, it isn't enough to make a huge deal of. I just call myself white, although it technically isn't true. It's not like someones gonna look up my ancestry.

you have the right to call yourself what you please. but you have to realize that it is probably hurting your Grandmother and making her feel that you are ashamed of her. If you had a child with say for example and Asian man and your child disowned your half of her background how would you feel? but then i know tht it can be diffcult to explain your background to people. If that is the case well people ask you just tell them it is irrelevent and has nothing to do wih your personality or the person you are on the inside.

At this point in history, I doubt that anyone can claim pure anything. Do you identify as Black? Is this the culture you feel at home with? You get to decide.
