I like Gateway . They just helped me get the right memory ,went from 256mb to 1gd . Got a DVD,CD inturnal burner to replace my cd burner , wanted to burn to dvd's . I know I'm getting the right thing at a good price . Went on line & compared . When I got my desktop I told them what I needed it for , they put together a computer that was just right for me & my needs at that time , I've had it since 2003 & very pleased ..My needs changed as I expanded my abilitys . Rather then replace a really good computer I've added to it & changed things ,like the memory , dvd burner & added many programs . More harddrive is next as I fill things up . It's fast , fun & even great for our grand kids home work .
Gateway is where we plan to go for a wireless laptop real soon.

I've shopped Dell since 1994 and have never had a problem with their equipment. I'm sure that there are people who will say the same about the brands you mentioned also.
Compaq used to cost more than the others (almost equivalent to an IBM) ; HP needs to stick with printers; and Gateway used to be just plain cheap in all respects. Lots of things may have changed over the years. I've never been interested since I've been more than satisfied with Dell.
Of course, now that I've said all that, you'll go buy a Dell and it will break down within the first week! LOL.
You can find horror stories about all makes and models. Don't let that dissuade you if you're partial to a certain brand. Just stick with the major brands and you should be okay.

I would purchase an HP before buying a Gateway.
I've owned Gateway equipment in the past and it was junk. The type of applications I use my computers for are software development. Depending on what you are doing with it, a Gateway might be okay.
However, a friend of mine just brought his dead Gateway desktop to my office to gut the parts. He replaced it with a Dell.
HP has made vast improvements and has actually moved back into the #1 spot - kicking Dell down a notch. Also, Compaq was merged by HP.

I have an HP machine. Before I bought it I asked around about HP machine and most people said that the machines where great but the customer support was not so good. I have yet to need to call customer support because I just get help from people in tech forums. If you are ok with doing it the way I've done then an HP machine should be ok.
And yes Compaq and HP are one and the same now but I don't know if the machines are built the same.

Compaq and HP are essentially the same company, with Compaq being bought out by HP (i think). Their products use similar parts and are manufactured in a similar manner. However, many people still regard HP as being of higher quality and more reliability. Gateway makes cheap computers, in this case you get what you pay for, for the most part.

HP and Compaq are slow due to "proprietary" programming added to the OS, compared to "home-built".
Dell and Gateway also have some problems, usually dealing with warranty "replacement".
The MAIN problem with almost ALL "commecial" brands is buying them "pre-loaded" with the OS and assorted programs.
The MAIN problem is that you don't get the "original" programming discs. Your only option is their "recovery" system. You also usually get many things you may have no use for.
In MANY cases, you can NOT upgrade anything more than the memory, because the recovery system will NOT recognize the newer upgrades and therefore may refuse to run or will run incorrectly.
I recommend that if buying a "commercial" unit you try to get one with ONLY what you need in hardware, and with NO operating system. It may cost slightly more because of having to buy the OS and other software separately, BUT you can almost ALWAYS use the same software on a newer system or upgrade without problems.

HP generally does not have standarized upgradable systems. You must buy their components. But they are reliable.
I disagree with the negative postings about Gateway- I have two one desk top and their Averatec (Gateway made in China) laptop. I also have a Compac as backup- My company uses Dell and they tend to slow down when the system tends to be busy. My son says its overheating.
You can get a lemon in any brand- my suggestion would be to get a replacement warranty. That is if you have over two breakdowns with same component they would replace it not repair it.

I have had a three gateway computers. They work great. They were advertising that their customer support was always answered by someone in North America. Not sure if they still are.
