Emo has nothing to do with sexual preference! I think that you're painting with too broad a brush. Cutters? Please! eyeliner? That's more goth. I'm not sure where you're getting your info from. Emo was originally used to describe a musical genre, not the kind of people you're listing,

Well.. that's pretty stereotypical.
As in pretty much any group of people... everyone's different. Those that label themselves (or are labeled by others) as emo are not all cutters, nor are they all gay/bi. Sure, some might be... but then there's also people labeled as prep who could be cutters or gay/bi. The eyeliner thing... that's more of just a fashion thing, not really specific to emo or goth or whatever.
I have friends that are emo (at least.. that's what they're labeled as by everyone else, they don't really say that they're emo or anything else).. none of them are cutters and they're all straight. And yes, they wear eyeliner.. except for one boy that doesn't.

Emo has nothing to do with the scene. I'm a punk with a heavy influence from the goth scene. Goths see that the world suck and say "Oh well. Can't let that ruin my day."
True emo is nothing more than a type of music played by bands such as Fugazi, No Knife, and Rites of Spring. Yes, even Dashboard Confessional. Oh my god! My Chemical Romance isn't on the list I just wrote. That's because they're not emo. Emo kids are a lot more like hippies with their attitude, just a more introverted version.
Sorry, if I ranted like a jerk. It's just that the confusion between what's what gets a little aggrivating over time.

Emo is a broad title that covers a lot of different styles of emotionally-charged punk rock. This can also include goths, punks, hippy or redneck grunge head (Kurt Cobain).
Everyone and everything generally becomes categorised.
Just like every label where people want to conform but rebel against society (i believe..) people push themselves to meet the criteria of the label. Not every emo is a self harmer or bi.
They are just emotional- and are open to new emotional experiences.
I think people feel alot safer when the conform to a label- its the same as religions. You can fin people that have the same likes/ dislikes and are able to communicate in the same language and confront problems like cutting.

Well, I actually don't think that emo's give themselves the label, at least a "true" emo wouldn't. Everyone is different and everyone brings their own flavor into a style so I don't think that every "true" emo is going to be the same. But it is true that a majority of the people caterogized into that are gay/bi, cut, and wear eyeliner. But I like to think of emo as a fashion style and less like a lifestyle.

"Emo" is just a label, and labels mean different things to different people. If you asked any 100 people, I doubt any of them could agree what it means. Sort of like "popular" could mena looked up to and respected, having a lot of friends or those evil preppy junior high students who dress in skimpy clothing. Sorry, this probably will not help much. But people call me emo just because I talk back and am sarcastic and listen to "emo" music. So I guess that could be one definition.

Not *all* emos are "cutters", or "gay/bi"...but once you place yourself in that social 'category', if you will, you feel the pressure to do those things since that will help to classify you into that group.
Basically, people believe that that is what emos do, so when they categorize themselves in that stereotype they do what they think is expected of them...Does that make sense? It's kind of an endless cycle.

the emo stereotype has lots of vairiations..
theya re quite androngineous.., but only a few of them are gay or bi..
thats more common in the girls.
some of them have physical self inflected wounds, but all of them have emeotionla slef inflected wounds.
emos are like a cheap version of goths and they whine much more.
stay away from them..they are pathetic and so is most of the music they listen.

nah, thats kinda stereotypical, people have their own opinions on it, coz there isnt ONE OFFICIAL meaning to it. I think its kinda like a describing word for a certain look. and people who say bands are "emo" dont know anything coz even the bands dont know what emo means.
