It takes a court of law to change someone's name.
Whatever name is on your child's birth certificate is the LEGAL NAME of your child.
You named the child, only you can change the child's name.
When a person is 18 years old they can petition the court for a legal name change.
OR if you sign a court document allowing someone to adopt your child as the child's father, then the name is changed to that person's surname.
Keep your child and your last name the same!
It's your child, you nutured that child in your womb for 9 months.
If you are not married, and even if you were married,
You can use your own last (maiden) name for you and/or your child.
It's all up to what the mother puts on the birth certificate.
My friend's daughter has 2 children by 2 different fathers, and they both have her last name.
Boy Friends come and go, but a child and it's mother are forever.
In many countries, outside of the USA the child's last name would be yours + your married spouse's name.
Don't let this paternity test scare you in any way.
YOU are the MOM, and you have the rights, and the right to child support as well!
Be a good, Loving, Nurturing Mom.
Take some Child ED, or Mommy and Me classes!
Or Parenting Classes if this guy is being mean to you!
You will make friends and get to know other's who can help you.

My friend and her husband didn't get married until a year after they had their first baby and they had to go through some paper work before they could change their baby's last name from the Moms to the Fathers last name. He also had to claim their baby as his and it wasn't just something that happened over night.

yes , i can understand what your going through cause i'm going through something similar the one way your sons name will change is if you get a court order to change it example later on you marry some else and they adopt him otherwise it will stay the same. Good Luck with all the court days.

I had this similar difficulty some years in the past. I were given an lawyer. i become advised that that's noted as a criminal call change. i become also advised that replacing the childs call received't terminate the rights of the organic and organic father. i imagine you should get an lawyer to regulate your son's call. The lawyer is going to wish to pursue getting decrease back infant help that is a waiste of you money. that is maximum acceptable to bypass to the lawyer familiar workplace of your state and report for infant help. The lawyer generals workplace will really implement the help. they are going to take it from him with the help of witholding his income. The lawyer familiar will also placed his charge list on his credit report. they received't stress a relationship consisting of your son and his organic and organic father . If he attempt's to connect because he has to pay. Too undesirable for him. you may merely ignore about him and make him pay for his own lawyer to attempt to wrestle for vistitation rights. he will provide up once he see's he's on the dropping area.

In order to change the last name, if its already been stated on a birth certificate, is the father would have to adopt the child in order to get it changed.

Your son will continue having whatever name you put on the birth certificate (your last name). When people give children the last name of the father, it is by choice, not by law. :)

the name that is one his birth certificate says your last name then it does not have to be changed...as it is your child can have any last name you chose to give him...he does not have to have the fathers name, that is just the norm
