A few days ago my disposal started making a noise like it was caught, something was down there, or it was about to break. However, I checked it with a flashlight like 10 times and there is absolutely nothing down there. I live in an apartment and they said if I say it's broken I will have to pay a plumber. How can I know what to do?

Look under the garbage disposal unit (inside the sink cabinet). You will probablly find a hex wrench and a hole (at the bottom of the unit, about at the center). With the power OFF, stick the wrench there and turn it right and left few times.

If there is a reset button, press it.

Now try....

Turn the power off. Most disposals have a hex/Allen key bolt in the bottom that you can turn to break the thing loose. A lot of the time the thing that is jambing the unit is hard to see. Try working it until it spins free. There is probably a reset button on the bottom of the disposal as well. Push it in to reset it and give it a whirl. Oh, turn the power back on.

Yes, you need to use the disposal wrench in the hole in the bottom of the disposal. It looks like a very large allen wrench. Crank it until it moves in both directions and then hit the reset. No plumber needed! It you don't have the wrench, just go to a hardware store and buy one. They will only cost $1 or 2.

Most garbage disposals have a re set button located under the sink on the base of them. Push it in and hold for a few seconds and that may re set it for you and hopefully problem solved. If not i would ask a friend that is handy or call your land lord to get the problem fixed. I may just be old and you may need a new one. Good luck!

Have you used the crank assy that comes with it?? (I have had 2 disposals and the assy is like a wierd screwdriver) and crank the disposal in the hole provided for the assy and then press the reset button, or just press the reset button (usually on the VERY bottom of the garbage disposal) or last chance....reset all of your fuses--if you can.

did you take the disposal out and check it? It could have a bearing going bad. Prob cheaper to replace it
